Getting to know The Ninja Photographer: Part I

Getting to know The Ninja Photographer: Part I Jolene Kaneshige PhotographyWhat is a Ninja?

Ninja, also called Shinobi, made their big debut in Japan’s feudal era during the 15th century. They were masters of covert operations, espionage, and infiltration. The origination of the word can be traced back to the 8th century and means “to steal away” or “to hide.” It is often associated with being stealthy and invisible.

Are you a Ninja?

“Ninja” or “Nin-chan” (the Japanese way for saying little Ninja) is actually a nickname that was given to me by friends after they saw me doing really high kicks and scale a wall. I had big dreams when I was younger and said “When I grow up, I want to be a ninja!” Thus the lifelong challenge to embark in activities that would help me actualize my dream of becoming one. My hobbies include Cosplay; to become a Master of Disguise, and Circus Arts such as: Aerial Dance, Lyra, and Partner Acrobatics; to keep me flying high and light on my toes!

How do your Ninja skills translate to photography?

I like to plot and scheme. I mean endlessly since those long lost, far gone childhood years of endless summer days. The bigger the surprise engagement or proposal, the better and more excited I feel! Planning covert, top secret operations, especially in Honolulu, Hawaii; is what I do best, and what would I consider to be my dream job.  There have been countless times where my family members and my partner give me “the look” and say “What are you scheming? You are being too quiet and I know you are up to no good!” (They are usually right about that too!) Now, add a camera to my hands and it’s a match made in heaven. Mauahahaha!!!

Do you have any other childhood dreams?

Yes! I really want to join the circus!!! You must really think I’m crazy, but I really think that it would be magical and fun! Like Disneyland, but for adults.  Not to mention…ohh the photo opportunities!
