5 things “To Do” before you propose in Hawaii

Planning a surprise proposal is an exhilarating journey filled with anticipation and excitement. If you are looking at this blog then you’re looking for that perfect way to surprise your love with a surprise proposal and engagement photos!

When working with Jolene Kaneshige Photography on your surprise Hawaii proposal, there are only a few things you need!  I know, is it really that simple?  Hell yeah!  You will need:

  1. Proposal Date and Time (wait was that 2 things?)

  2. Package

  3. Location

We’ll take care of the planning and the photography to craft a proposal that's as unique as your love story. Whether you imagine a quiet beachside moment or a dramatic cliffside we will bring your vision to life.  All you need to do is show up!

Now that we got the proposal all taken care of, here are our top 5 things “To Dos” before you propose in Hawaii.

  1. Make sure you are both vibing.  Have you discussed long term goals, a shared plan for your future together.  Is the timing right? If you ask “Will you marry me?” will you get an enthusiastic “YES!”

  2. Talk to the important people. Whether it’s your partner’s family or close friends, they can help you gain insight and even win points with your soon to be fiance.  Not to mention, if they are coming with you to Hawaii then they can help with a cover story and continue to celebrate with you right after!  It's a win-win all around.

  3. The engagement ring.  Please don’t wait until the last minute for this one.  Take your time in selecting the ring and get it done 5-6 months before you plan to propose.  While some cultures don’t use engagement rings, it is a token of love and something many partner’s look forward to.  In my experience photographing couples from all over the world, it doesn’t always have to be a diamond.  I’ve seen many beautifully handcrafted rings with semi precious gems.  The ring is as unique as your love story after all and there are many talented artisans out there that can help you with a custom design to fit your budget.

  4. Who’s in charge of planning?  There is a lot to do and see on your Hawaii vacation.  If you aren’t normally the planning type, take an active role to plan a few days on your Hawaii vacation.  The important thing is to pin down a few dates/activities ahead of time to not arouse suspicion.

Pro tips:

  • Practice your proposal speech ahead of time.  It doesn’t have to be a long drawn out speech, rather something heartfelt and in the moment.

  • Use a thin ring box or something that easily fits in your pocket.  We don’t want anyone to be sus.  Backpacks are also a good way to discreetly conceal a full sized ring box.

  • Prep the day before.  Read the itinerary plan and quick Proposal guide, figure out how long it will take to get to the location.  Text us if you have any questions, we’re here for you.

  • Make dinner reservations as soon as you have a proposal date and time.  We have a list of restaurants to help you make quick work of this.  Also make sure to add about 15 minutes of buffer time for travel to the restaurant.

  • Don’t forget about the hands!  Does your partner get their nails done regularly?  Hands are a focal point in proposals photos.  If there is a time to get a manicure, this would be it!  You could be super sneaky and have a friend of a family member take them prior to your Hawaii vacation or you could plan some time to go together.  Your hands are also important.

These “To Dos” and tips should be the most important things to cover before you get down on one knee and ask the big question “Will you marry me?”
