How to include family in your Surprise Proposal

By, Tabitha Miki CFD FDI & Jolene Kaneshige, Proposal Coordinator

What better way to ask for your partner’s hand in marriage than to be surrounded by the love and support of family and close friends. There are many ways that your family and future in-laws can help play an important role in your surprise proposal. After all, they can provide valuable insight into your future partner’s likes, dislikes, and dreams, but the best part is if they are in on the big secret! Make your destination proposal on Oahu a precious memory and a family affair!

How to include family in your Surprise Proposal:

  • An incognito approach is to have family members distract your partner while you are on vacation.  Scope out the perfect spot for your surprise proposal and set the plan into motion.  On the big day, designate a time for your family and future in-laws to hide at the location.  When everyone is out of sight you can escort your partner to the secret spot!  After you drop to one knee and your partner accepts, family can yell surprise and come out of their hiding spots!

  • Throw your partner for a loop when you meet up with family for dinner, except they made a “mistake” on the reservation time and tell you and your partner to come back in 20 minutes.  Meanwhile you escort your partner to a designated spot with a beautiful view at sunset to propose to them.  Family can observe your proposal from a slight distance, but approach immediately after for warm wishes and hugs all around!

  • If your future partner or their family members have children, they could help hold up signs saying, “Will You Marry Me”.

  • Nieces or Nephews, or both, could help bring the ring to you.

  • On Oahu, you could rent a giant game of four in a row with special pieces crafted so one side will show “ Will You Marry Me” and the family could play all together !

  • A scavenger hunt with the whole family where they have to look for pieces together, a marry me sign, a separate empty box to symbolize the ring, and a bouquet of flowers could all be hidden. Then everyone brings the items to the meeting point and you could propose there.

  • Beach Day, Nieces and Nephews could help build a sand castle and you can sneak a “Marry Me” sign then at the sand castle you could propose.

  • If you are fun loving, convince your partner’s family to practice and perform a dance, then suggest you all do a Tik Tok “dance challenge” and perform the dance and propose at the end.

  • At your place or a family member's house, place Magnet letters inside latex balloons and fill them with helium. Each family member will hold a balloon and you can say it is a game. With their free hand they will pass around a silk rose or a real one to music, every time the music stops, the person with the rose pops their balloon. Once all the balloons have been popped or the letters are all out everyone takes the letters and puts the message onto a separate board to spell out “ Marry Me”!

These are just a few ideas to provide some inspiration, there are so many more things you could do! I hope that these will definitely get your creative juices flowing to plan the best surprise proposal for your partner! If you need more creative ideas for proposals, check out our other blogs!
