Ehukai Beach, North Shore - Oahu
Located on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii is Ehukai Beach, also known as “Banzai Pipeline.” This beach is famous for holding the Pipeline Masters Surf Contest during the winter months, is a great local surf spot, and a beautiful place for a Surprise Engagement Marriage Proposal, a Destination Wedding, or Family Portraits.
Maik & Ieva traveled quite a ways to get to Hawaii from Germany! I have a lot of experience shooting Destination Weddings closer to the Honolulu area so when I heard they wanted to go to Ehukai Beach, I was super excited to be their wedding photographer.
It was a little bit of an adventure to get to North Shore since its about an hour from the Honolulu town area. Once you clear the H2 highway there is only one road to get in and out. Driving to the North Shore is always such a treat because it’s full of lush greenery, pineapple fields, and is a reflection of old Hawaii.
Once you get to the Ehukai Beach the parking lot is a little small, but there is some extra parking down a side road. It’s a short walk down to the beach, but what is surprising is how long the beach is in either direction. It seems to extend for miles!
It was a great day with some overcast clouds and light showers. Rain on your Wedding day might seem like a downer, but in Hawaii a little bit of rain is considered to be good luck and a “Blessing from Heaven.” We can’t control the weather, but rain or shine, I am ready with plastic bags in my kit to protect my cameras to ensure that I don’t miss out on the big moment! Also, from a photo perspective, the clouds covering the sun creates a nice soft light box in the sky and creates the perfect lighting for dreamy beach portraits. Truth be told, if it were up to me, everyday that I am out shooting would be a little overcast to capture and inspire those romantic moments like the ones these two love birds shared together.
