Get The Most Out Of Your Photo Session in Hawaii

Photo Sessions In Hawaii Are Quite An Investment! How Can We Make The Most Of It?

Whether your session is for a destination wedding, surprise engagement proposal, family portraits, or individual portrait session the most important thing is to be on time! Ideally, you want to arrive 10 minutes prior to the shoot. I can’t stress how important it is to get started on time! Sometimes it takes people awhile to warm up to and feel comfortable in front of the camera. This is all completely normal! It sometimes helps to take selfies with your significant other to help with the warm up process. Be silly, make faces, and have fun!

“Getting started late in most scenarios also means the difference in getting good quality photos.”

Imagine the sun has gone down. Even though cameras have great technology, they certainly aren’t as good as the human eye. Losing daylight means lower quality photos which appear grainy and out of focus. Which means taking the same shot more than a few times to ensure 1 in focus photo. Also, the background behind you loses detail and is completely black. (Yey, floating heads are my favorite thing…)

What Should I Wear Or Not Wear?

Always make sure you wear something you are comfortable in! If you wear something you are not then this will also be reflected and obvious in the photo. Clothing should fit well and not be baggy or too tight. What you wear should convey your message and bring your best self forward!

What About An Outfit Change?

For photo sessions that are at least an hour, yes absolutely! I highly recommend it, time willing. However, if we are in a location where a changing room is not readily available I recommend an outfit that looks great with different accessories such as a jacket or scarf, hats and/or sunglasses. What colors look best in photos?

Solid colors instead of patterns. What’s the deal? As someone that loves prints and patterns this one is hard for me, but say in the event there is something that needs to be retouched such as a water spot. On the technical side the camera creates what is called “moire pattern,” which means the difficulty level of the edit job on this is close to impossible to edit out. Sometimes patterns can also dominate the photo which takes away the focal point of the photo aka…you!

Okay so solid colors such as: dark rich hues such as turquoise, eggplant, burgundy, deep greens, warm earthy tones, and grays rather than black. Black tends to be too high in contrast and if multiple subjects wear black there is no separation between them. Think a big black blob with 3 or 4 heads.

What Are The Worst Colors To Wear In Photos?

Pale pastel colors sometimes make the subject look drab and pasty. I usually suggest that clients do NOT wear bright reflective colors such as neon green, neon yellow, neon pink, bright red, bright orange or salmon tones. The bright Hawaiian sun tends to reflect these colors and reflect them on your face or those around you. This is not something easily fixable in Photoshop or fixable at all. Skip the brights!

Should I Get My Makeup Done?

Professional makeup application is very much recommended! It’s important to put your best face forward so to say! The technical reason behind this is because professional camera equipment, while can be helpful in certain aspects, can also accentuate your problem areas. Oily skin or blemishes are very obvious on camera. High quality camera equipment also doesn’t have an easy swipe filter options such as on instagram or snap chat.

Schedule make up application 2 hours prior to the photo session. The make up artist will know everything it takes to get your camera ready!

If you are a DIYer there are a lot of great resources on YouTube to get you started. Actually, I learned a lot of great hair tips from YouTube and also by walking into Sephora.

For those of you that usually don’t wear much makeup at all it’s important to use a powder foundation that matches your skin tone to reduce the level of shine in photos. This is a bare minimum!
